Background Info on the Italian People

The SIL Ethnologue reports that 37 million people worldwide speak Italian, making it number 57 on their list of Top 100 World Languages by Population

Italian is spoken by Italy’s 57 million residents, and is a minority language in Switzerland and Austria, as well as in Somalia, Libya and Ethiopia, which were once Italian colonies.

The World Factbook reports that the population of Italy is predominantly ethnic Italian with small clusters of German-, French-, and Slovene-Italians in the north and Albanian-Italians and Greek-Italians in the south. Religion is predominantly Catholic with small Jewish and Protestant communities and a growing Muslim immigrant community.

According to the 1990 U.S. Census, 1.3 million Americans speak Italian in their homes, making Italian the fifth most common language spoken in the U.S.

In 1996, over 1/2 million Italians visited the U.S. as tourists.

Between the years 1820 to 1996, over 5.4 million Italians immigrated to the U.S., making it the third largest country of origin for that period, behind Germany and Mexico.

One of the best introductions to the culture and customs of Italy is the 4-page Culturegram published by Brigham Young University. You can download a 4-page pdf file for $4.

Information for Churches

Perhaps you've noticed that several Italian families have moved into your community. Your church would like to get acquainted with them and find ways to serve your new neighbors. But how can you begin?

Begin by cultivating a loving heart, a listening ear, and the habit of prayer. Look for opportunities to learn about other cultures and develop skills for cross-cultural communication. There are lots of resources on this site, including the article "How to Start a Cross-Cultural Ministry," that can help you prepare to move forward in faith.

The Jesus Film is a great way to share the gospel in the "heart language" of your Italian neighbors. Campus Crusade for Christ has produced this beautiful film of the gospel of Luke and translated it into over 600 languages, including Italian. Your church can buy a video for less than $20 and sponsor a "Italian Night" to show the film and begin a dialogue. Ask Italian leaders in the community if they would like to see the film and if they'll help you invite other families.

To order the Jesus Film, visit Jesusfilm.org. Or order by phone from Campus Crusade at 1-800-432-1997.
